- afectado/a –lleno de emoción, in English would be affected, but the meaning is a bit different
La zona se vio afectada por el terremoto-the area was affected by the earthquake
- ágil – vivo y fluido, in English nimble or agile
A pesar de sue dad es muy ágil-besides her age is very nimble
- agitado/a –excitada, conmovida, excitada y violent, this English can have several words depending on the situation, to talk about people that is not in a good place is unsettled
Después del accidente Mónica estaba muy agitada-after the accident Monica was very unsettled.
But talking about situations can be hectic
Is you are having a busy week you could say estoy muy ocupada, mi semana está siendo muy agitada-I am very busy, my week is being hectic
- agudo/a –de una frecuencia elevada in English we would use high pitched
No puedo soportar el sonido de su voz, es demasiado agudo-I can’t stand the sound of her voice, it is too hugh pitched
- ahogado/a –emitida con dificultad, although ahogado can mean drowned or suffocated, we can use it as out of breath.
Después de la carrera Juan sonaba ahogado-After the race Juan sounded out of breath
- arisco/a – áspera, malhumorada y gruñona, when we talk about animals is gruff, but if we talk about people means someone unfriendly, a bit unsociable.
Mi gato es muy arisco, no se deja acariciar por nadie-my cat is very gruff, he won’t let anyone pet him.
- áspero/a – desagradable al oído porque no es suave, it is something rough or uneven
Mi abuelo ha trabajo siempre y sus manos son muy ásperas-my granddad has always worked and his hands are rough
- atronador/a –que atruena, ensordece o aturde, thunderous or deafening, we normally use it to describe a sound.
Estabamos en casa y oímos un sonido atronador-we were at home and we heard a thunderous sound.
- celestial –agradable y perfecto, como del cielo, same in English celestial, we use it to describe something good, almost like from another word.
Me gusta ir al campo porque me da una sensación celestial-I love going to the countryside because it gives me a celestial feeling
- empalagoso/a –muy dulce, it can describe something really sweet, as a desert or something chessy
Esto leyendo una novela, y aunque es buena es un poco empalagosa-I am reading a novel, and even tho is good it is a bit cheesy
- estridente –agudo, desagradable y chirriante, we could use it to describe a noise, in that case in English would be grating or raucous and also can be use for something flashy or garish
A mi prima le encanta vestir con colores estridentes-my cousins loves wearing garish colours
- etéreo/a –No concreto, puro o inalcanzable, it has a most of the time a poetic tone, it is something ethereal or sublime.
Su belleza era etérea-Her beauty was sublime
Las etéreas nubes cubrían el cielo-the celestial clouds covered the sky.
- gélido/a – distante y fría, it can be icy and regarding people someone unfriendly too.
Las mañanas de invierno son gélidas-Winter mornings are icy
Carlos me lanzó una mirada gélida cuando entré en la sala-Carlos gave me an unfriendly glance when I enter the room.
- hostil –en la que puedes notar intenciones enemigas, de adversidad, hostile or mean
Me parece que el hombre está mandando mensajes hostiles para provocar una respuesta-I think the man is sending hostile messages to get a response.
- impertinente –que molesta con sus exigencias, inappropiate or impertinent
Deja de hacer peticiones impertinentes por favor estamos trabajando-Stoped making impertinent requests, we are working
- irritante –que enoja, insoportable, exasperante, something irritating
No soporto el sonido del timbre, !es irritante!-I can’t stand the buzzer is irritating!
- jadeante –agitada y sofocada when you are panting
Después de una clase de spinning mi respiración es jadeante-after a spinning class my breath is panting
- mullido/a –blanda, something soft and comfortable
Me encanta el sofa de mi casa es muy mullido-I love my couch at my house, it is so soft
- penetrante –agudo, fuerte, estridente, hiriente, exagerado, ensordecedor, penetrating and deep
Hacía un frío penetrante-The cold was deep/intense
- pícaro/a –traviesa, descarada, juguetona. Although it could have a bad connotation something as mischievous or rascal, nowadays is common to use it with an affectionate tone, normally talking about kids.
Mi hermano pequeño está hecho un pícaro-my little brother is a little sneaky/naughty
- quebrado/a –debilitada y temblorosa, another word that has several meaning, it can mean uneven, shaky or even talking about money bankrupt.
Su voz sonaba quebrada-her voice sounded shaky
La compañia para la que trabajo ha quebrado-The company I work for has done bankrupt
- rotundo/a –lleno y sonoro, it is something decisive
La vistoria de nuestro equipo fue rotunda-our team’s victory was decisive
Su decision es rotunda, no va a cambiar de opinión-his decision is categorical, he is not going to change his mind
- sugerente –seductora, insinuante y tentadora, this word can also has two meanings, one is sexy or suggestive and the other one it makes your mind work intriguing.
Ese vestido no es mi estilo, es un poco sugerente-That dress is not my style, it is a bit suggestive.
Voy a estudiar esta idea, me parece muy sugerente-I am going to study this idea, I think is very intriguing
- susceptible –ofendido, vulnerable or sensitive
Estoy pasando una mala racha y al momento estoy muy susceptible-I am going trough a tough time and at the moment I am very sensitive.
- tierno/a – afectuoso, cariñoso muy amable, it is something tender or soft, but someone can be tierno meaning they are affectionate or loving.
El filete de ternera estaba muy tierno-the steak was very tender
Los niños son muy tiernos-kids are very affectionate
- varonil –masculino y viril, it is something masculine or mannish.
Ese hombre tiene un aspecto muy varonil-that man has a very masculine aspect
