SOLUTIONS
Estar herido en el orgullo
It is like saying someone has their pride wounded, and it can be used in lots of context but imagine your friend was discussing something and he thought he was right but then he found out he wasn’t, if next time you have a discussion among friends and he doesn’t tell his opinion you could joke saying.
You do not say your opinion because you are still wounded from last time, right?
Or if you have an interview for a job, you think totally suits you but you don’t get it, you will be herido en el orgullo.
No dar pie con bola
We can use it, for an specific moment of time, like in a story you are telling, a specific day or season, and it would be something like “to miss the target” or doing lots of thing not in the perfect way.
Imagine you are having a bad time, and your friend asks you to organize a birthday party for one of your other friends you could say
I am sorry, but I think is better if you doy as lately I do everything wrong, it wouldn’t be a great party.
Estar de capa caída
When you are going through some hard times, you know sometimes you are not full of energy and a bit lower than usual, it does not need to be for a specific reason just one of those days…
Imagine your friend phone you to go out to a party, if you do not feel like it you could reply saying
Thanks for inviting me, but I do not feel like it, I do not know if it is because of the cold, but this week I am a bit low.
To express something similar we can also use pasar una mala época/racha, although if we use this the sense of that “shitty” feeling goes longer, it is not just one day.
Tener un día de perros
It is kind of having a bad day mixed with a bit of anger
Is you are having a bad day, and someone ask you how is it going you could say
Better don’t asl me, because you do not want to know, I am having a bad day.
#nota we can say that someone has un humor de perros, when he is having un día de perros también.
Hacer realidad un sueño
When something amazing happens, it is a dream come true.
Imagine you always wanted to visit South America and you manage to save money and get the time off to have a proper trip there you will feel like
Estoy haciendo un sueño realidad. I am making a dream come true
Llegar a lo más alto
When someone/something reach the top
Imagine one of your friend always worked really hard and now she has got a promotion to be the director of a big project, you congratulate her saying
I am really proud of you, you have reach the top working hard.
Or imagine you wrote a book and it becomes a bestseller.
Your book has reached the top.
Dar saltos de alegría
When someone is so happy/excited…that they need to do a happy dance, in Spain instead of dance we jump 🙂
If you get really good news, imagine you are going to become an auntie/uncle. You would express your happiness saying
Estoy dando saltos de alegría. I am jumping of joy.
Venirse abajo
We use when someone gets discouraged easily.
Your friend really wants to change jobs, and he was really happy and excited because he is looking for a job and he got an interview, but after the interview he did not get the job, if after those news he wants to give up the search, you could say
You can’t get discouraged so easily, it has been only the first interview, there will be more to come.
#nota-we can also say venirse arriba, to express the opposite, we use it to say that someone gets excited easily. Imagine you are talking about a dress up party, but it is just a thought, but one of your friends a few days later phone you and say she has already got a fancy dress you could say
Macarena the thing about the party was just a thought, you get excited very quick.
