very useful sentences in Spanish

 

• ¡date prisa!

Used when you want to hurry someone up, and that is the equivalent in English too.

If you are running late to the cinema and your friend isn’t still where you were supposed to meet when you phone her you will warn her…

¿dónde estás? La pelí va  a empezar pronto, ¡date prisa!

Where are you? The movies is starting soon, hurry up!

 

 

• ¡ya era hora!

You can use it when someone was long due, in English you will say it was about time.

If your friend was always complaining about her job, but never did something to change it, but suddenly when you meet her again she announce you that she has left her job. You could say

¡Por fin! ¡Ya era hora! Ese trabajo te estaba hacienda miserable.

Finally! It was about time! That job was making you miserable

 

 

• ¿qué pasa?

We can use it as a greeting, to see how things are going, like in English the famous what’s up? Or what is going on?

When you arrive to the pub and see your friends is typical to say

¡Hey! ¿Qué pasa? ¿Cómo va todo?

Hey! What’s up? How is everything?

But also we can use it if we want to know if anything is wrong with the meaning of what’s the matter?

If you feel something is wrong with your friend you would show your interest asking

¿Qué pasa? ¿Está todo bien?

What is the matter? Is everything ok?

 

 

• A partir de ahora

Used to show determination or that something is going to change, as in English you will say from now on.

Like if you want to quid sugar you could say

¡Se acabó! A partir de ahora no voy a comer más chocolate.

That is it! From now on I am not going to eat chocolate.

 

 

• ¡ a tu salud!

If we cheers it is usual to say salud, but sometimes we twist it a bit and we say “ a tu salud”, or even “ a nuestra salud” that means here to your health, or here to our healt (depending on the sentences.

Try to use it next time you are having a drink with your Spanish friends 🙂

 

 

• De una vez por todas

It is a bit long but quite popular when you think something is going to happen after several tries, it means once and for all.

Imagine you buy the lottery you could joke with your friends saying

A ver si me toca esta vez y dejo de trabajar de una vez por todas

See if I win this time and I stop working once and for all

 

 

• Dejemos este tema.

Sometimes is better to not talk about something to avoid an argument so…in English will be let’s drop the subject.

if you are talking about a controversial subject with your friends on a night out but you want to have a good time you could say

Dejemos este tema, que estamos de fiesta, vamos a divertirnos.

Let’s drop the subject that we are partying, let’s have some fun.

 

 

 

      .  Día sí, día no

To express how often you do something, and it will be every other day.

If someone ask how often you go to the gym you could say

Día sí, día no

Every other day

That is if you do tho 🙂

 

 

• Espera y verás,

Very similar to its English equivalent, wait and see

If you are impatient about the outcome of something one of your friend could tell you

Espera y versa

Wait and see

#note we can use veremos in the same way, that means we will see

 

 

• El tiempo dirá

Very similar as well to its English equivalent time will tell

If someone is making plans and they ask you if you will join you but you are not quite sure you could say

El tiempo dirá

Time will tell

And the last one, another related with being patient is

 

 

• Es cuestión de tiempo,

It is a matter of time, as we will say in English

If you are doing something wring at work, and you do not want to say you did, it is better you do , because…

Es cuestión de tiempo que tus compañeros lo descubran.

It is a matter of time that your colleagues find out.
